History of Vallo della Lucania
The ancient name was Castrum Cornutum and came from the founders of the town, Cornuti, a people coming from Illiria, where there was a town called Cornuto. A manuscript of XVIII century says that the two hamlets, Cornuti and Spio, had been founded during the time of Hannibal.
Until XVI century the town was small and with a few inhabitants. Then, at the end of 1400 it was dominated by Santa Casa dell’Annunziata from Napoli family and it developed. In 1656 there was a terrible plague but the town returned to life thanks to the strength of the population.
In XVIII century the name became Vallo di Novi and this was the richest and most prosperous period thanks to silk and leather workings. The market was instituted in Vallo and thanks to this vivid economy Vallo survived to the plagues and the famine of the following years.
In XVIII century schools of grammar, theology, philosophy and literature were created, especially thanks to the clergy.
In 1809 French government instituted the state school in Vallo. In 1809 Gioacchino Murat visited Vallo and was welcomed with warmth and friendliness by the inhabitants. After the rebellions of 1828 Marshal Del Carretto arrived to Vallo as a commissioner of the king. The rebellion was violently crushed and the conspirators were shot in the square of Spio on the evening of 19th 1828. Some jails were built, too.
In 1848 there was a new rebellion by Costabile Carducci, a deputy (from Capaccio) in Neapolitan Parliament. In Vallo there was the proclamation of the Republic.
In 1862 the name of the town became Vallo della Lucania.
